Return of the Battle for the LGF “Tweet Counter”Posted: October 17, 2011
Oh this is just too hilarious…
Last night, Gus 802 was quite proud of his contribution to the lizard kingdom, and posted the following:
Now, technically, there wasn’t anything wrong with Gus’s statement. He did in fact author the articles, and they did show up in that configuration under “Tweeted Articles” in the LGF sidebar.
However, the “Tweeted Articles” list in and of itself has always been flawed, as we pointed out quite a while ago that the silly counters that determine the list don’t actually count “tweets” at all. In fact, Johnson was so busted on this that he needed to have a “sekrit thread” to assure the cult that he was still competent as a programmer and it was all some sort of misunderstanding. He even called on bit.ly to correct the error (as if they have anything to do with it, or should care). To this day, we assume that Johnson is still waiting for them to “fix” the thing…and waiting…
So, as is customary in a blog war, the combatants involved use the tools at their disposal to flame, debunk, mock, or otherwise retort the other side. For this example, it isn’t hard to prove this faux-tweet counter point. When a comment like Gus’ appears, it isn’t surprising that someone, somewhere took some action, with a giggle and an intent to get someone’s attention. Enter the Johnson:
Of course, Capt. DERP didn’t think that perhaps the point was to prove that the “tweet counters” don’t actually count tweets, or that he’d inadvertently prove the point again with this statement, by saying that his wonderful “tweet counter” creation could be “artificially inflated”, or that “hurting” really meant “to get a rise out of”, and that this goal was, with this statement, well achieved.
Or did it come to him?
‘Cause almost an hour later, he issued the following declaration:
Oh noes! I suppose we wait for the inevitable announcement that Johnson has finally busted out his best coding kung-fu and custom-installed …
…an actual tweet counter?
Update: We’re not exactly sure what CJ thought he did. Take good old LGF article #17960. Add “stalkers”. Now, watch the “views” counter, vs. the “tweet counter”.
Da shiznit’s still broken, yo. That thread has never actually been tweeted (or “retweeted”).
Update: Now here’s some crazy “tweet counter” action, right on the front page. Watch the “tweets” skyrocket while the comments slowly increase, then BOOM, the counter falls back to 10. What the heck is up with that?
That’s Johnson’s solution?
